Roth IRA is after-taz money, so 401K money can not be rolled over to Roth IRA directly, has to withhold the tax first I believe.

roth is post tax, so you will at least see a 20% hit. A traditional IRA is still pre-tax, so you if you want to avoid the tax-hit, do the traditional.

I have this odd expectation that I will do well enough directing my investments in the near term (feb 2009, during the height of calamity) that I may take the tax hit, and have a modest chunk of money to purchase dirt-cheap stocks that will skyrocket once after the market turnaround is in. If I take the hit now and buy into a roth account, I pay no tax later on what I anticipate to be massive gains.

On the other hand, if it were presently 2005/2006/2007, I would have gone with the traditional, expecting moderate continued growth. my hope is heavily context based, and it is money that I can both now&later lose without risk to my long-term financial situation.

Naturally this advice is worth exactly what you paid for it: $0.00 ! good luck.
