Ron Paul On The Gold Standard
61
Ron Paul is One of the Largest Proponents of Returning to The Gold Standard
In the 1980's, Ron Paul served on the US Gold Commission to look at the role of gold in the financial system. Ron Paul was the one who came up with the commission in the first place. It was carrying forth a vision made in the Republican platform, a platform that has lost its way.
Ron Paul couldn't choose the members, so from the beginning, the things were against him. The majority was influenced by monetarists, who saw gold as too small a supply and paper as just fine. Ron Paul's team was ready, however, with this inspiring minority report.
The result was "The Case for Gold", and it was the greatest by-product from the gold commission. It covers the entire history of gold in the US, explains that its downfall was caused by ours and other governments, and explains the merit of having real money: prices reflect market realities (not their perceptions), government stays in check from printing money at will, and the people retain their freedom and earnings power.
The scholarship and intelligence impressed even the critics of the minority. Ron Paul worked with a team of economists that polled Murray Rothbard, among others.
It still holds up as an excellent example for moving beyond paper money and into the age of real money. Ron Paul favors complete monetary freedom to use any commodity as money, to make contracts in any money, and an end to the monopolization and printing power of the US Federal Reserve.
This is a strong piece of US history in this book. Not since the 1900's has a political figure made such a amazing and devastating case for monetary change. This great congressman from Texas ran circles around even the experts at the Federal reserve. A great performance, and an inspiring and learned book.
